Did you know that International Chocolate Day is September 13th? The U.S. National Confectioners Association decided that every year on September 13th, we will celebrate chocolate of all kind. This day also coincides with the birthday of Milton S. Hershey, the Founder of the Hershey Company!
Brief History of Chocolate
Chocolate, originating from the cocoa bean was first discovered back by ancient civilization, the Aztecs. This incredible treat that they found soon became used as a form of payment to trade with. The cocoa bean eventually made its way over to Europe and chocolate became loved by all Europeans. It originally was seen as a luxury item back then and most higher class europeans would enjoy their chocolate in the form of a hot beverage. When the Spaniards sailed across the sea to the Americas, you bet they took their luxury chocolate item to the new world.
In the 1800's is when chocolate became more accessible to the general public! In 1894 a businessman by the name of Milton S. Hershey founded the Hershey Chocolate Company. This was HUGE for chocolate lovers because this made chocolate even more affordable and accessible than ever before. More than ever were people able to enjoy their favorite sweet treat in all different forms.
Today, there are a ton of major chocolate companies, similar to the Hershey company. Chocolate has been transformed to be eaten in many different ways. Chocolate-tiers mix their chocolate with peanut butter, pretzels, adding it to cakes and ice cream, even mixing it with savory items such as burgers and bread. According to the Food Beverage Insider, chocolate is even known as a favorite candy to most Americans, as nearly 90% of Americans enjoy a little chocolatey treat on the regular.
